A United States B-1 Lancer strategic bomber capable of carrying 24 cruise missiles has arrived at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, following the UK government’s decision to permit “defensive” US operations against Iranian missile sites from British bases. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had initially refused permission for the US to use UK facilities during its joint military actions with Israel against Iran, reportedly leading to tensions with US President Donald Trump.

The 146-foot B-1 bomber, one of the fastest aircraft in the US Air Force with speeds exceeding 900 mph, landed at RAF Fairford on Friday evening. Nicknamed “the Bone,” the aircraft can carry up to 34 tonnes of weapons and is equipped with advanced radar, GPS targeting systems, electronic jammers and defensive countermeasures. Military analysts say operating from RAF Fairford allows the US to conduct long-range missions far more efficiently than flying directly from the United States.

The deployment comes as the conflict involving Israel, the United States and Iran entered its eighth day, with explosions reported in Tehran overnight following President Trump’s statement that any resolution would require Iran’s “unconditional surrender.” RAF Fairford has historically been used by the US military for long-range bombing missions, and its renewed role highlights the growing military activity surrounding the escalating regional conflict.

Meanwhile, the UK is reinforcing its military presence in the region. The Royal Navy destroyer HMS Dragon is being deployed to the Mediterranean with air-defence capabilities, while additional fighter jets, helicopters and naval assets are being positioned to protect British interests and allies. The government also confirmed that a drone strike on RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus caused only minimal damage and no casualties, while chartered flights have begun bringing British nationals home amid widespread flight disruptions across the Middle East.
