Police Issue Safety Advisory for Women in Eastern Province Following Recent Violence

Authorities in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province have issued a comprehensive safety advisory aimed at protecting women in the wake of recent violent incidents in Palgana that have raised public concern.

The Provincial Officer in Charge for the Major Crimes Prevention Division, Theivanayakam Menon, released the guidelines as part of an awareness initiative focused on improving personal safety and preventing crime.

According to the advisory, women are urged to avoid wearing expensive gold jewelry when visiting public places, as such items may attract criminal attention. The OIC also emphasized the importance of using only familiar or trusted modes of transport, warning against entering unknown vehicles, including unfamiliar three-wheelers.

The advisory further recommends that women avoid traveling alone whenever possible. Instead, they are encouraged to move in groups or with relatives and to share travel plans in advance with trusted individuals.

In addition, the public has been cautioned against accepting food or drinks from strangers under any circumstances, citing concerns over incidents involving drugging and theft. Authorities stressed the importance of remaining vigilant in public spaces.

In the event of any suspicious or dangerous situation, individuals are advised to immediately contact the police emergency hotline at 119.

Alongside these safety measures, the OIC also addressed ongoing economic and fuel challenges, urging the public to limit the use of private vehicles and rely more on public transportation. Citizens are encouraged to plan their travel efficiently by combining multiple errands into a single trip and purchasing essentials from nearby stores.

The advisory also highlights the benefits of using online platforms for educational and professional activities where possible. Additionally, the public is urged to conserve fuel by opting to walk or cycle for short-distance travel.

Police officials note that public cooperation and awareness are key to ensuring safety during this period of heightened concern.
